She had always been told that living by the edge of the forest would end up a stupid move, the rumours of the wolves living in its depths something she had been told since the moment of her birth, but she had never believed them. She had never seen a reason to believe in stories without proof, and she had instead only tried to test the boundaries, going closer to the things she wasn’t to touch and the things rated as dangerous.
She had ignored the warnings when she had first moved in, her house laying the closest to the forest out of the houses in the small town, with only a narrow field separating the darkness and her garden. The neighbours had all looked at her in wonder when she had arrived, her things filling the rooms of the small living quarters, and her lack of fear for the forest evident in all she did.
Even at that moment, as she was heading across the field towards the dark trees, having decided it was time to stop cowering in fear of it, could she feel her neighbours’ eyes digging into her back, a few reprimanding calls echoing across the growing distance between them. They all thought her young and stupid for doing what he did, but she couldn’t care less, not fully having moved there to make any friends. She had her friends in the nearby city, meeting them during the days, and she didn’t need the people of the town, not if they were all silly cowards.
Ducking under the branches, the dimness of the approaching night even thicker under the trees, she stood still for a moment, allowing her eyes to grow used to the lack of light before she kept on moving further in. The bag by her side, holding a bottle of alcohol, a book and a few other necessary supplies, thumped against her leg as she went, eyes scanning the old trees. ❞Wolves in these parts? They are all superstitious old fools.❝
